In Puerto Rico, Homeless Wash Feet for First Time

A group of church members gathered in a Puerto Rican park at 5 a.m. Sabbath to pray, read the Bible, and eat a light breakfast. Little did they expect to watched by homeless people when they were ejected from their usual spot and met in the city’s central square instead. The one-off move, however, changed their meetings permanently. Their monthly gathering has transformed into a weekly worship and breakfast for the homeless that culminated in a special communion service with grape juice, bread, and foot washing.

Seventh-day Adventists in the Southern Philippines assist Marawi city evacuees displaced by militant fighting

Adventist groups are assisting evacuees displaced from the Philippines’ largest Muslim city of Marawi during militant fighting in the southern Philippines this past week. Members of a militant group called the Maute invaded the city in response to a failed military attempt to capture the group’s pro-Isis leader on May 23. They took over a government hospital and burned a private Christian college and the city jail prompting Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in the island of Mindanao.

In Jamaica, Bus and Taxi Drivers Get Free Health Screenings

Scores of bus and taxi drivers were the beneficiaries of free health check-up last weekend, during a “Know Your Numbers” health drive organized by the Three Angels Pharmacy with support from members of some local Seventh-day Adventist Churches, health agencies and companies in Mandeville, Jamaica. Two hundred and forty of the approximately 400 persons registered were bus and taxi drivers who received the opportunity to be tested for Body Mass Index (BPI), blood glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, eye and HIV, on May 27-28, 2017. Healthy lifestyle and general counseling along with prayers for those who requested it were also done. A volunteer medical doctor was also available.

Church President Shares Message of Sympathy and Condolence

This week we have been tragically reminded we live in a world filled with suffering and sorrow, and I invite you, the world church family of Seventh-day Adventists to join me in praying for the victims and families who are suffering from these recent events. Last Sunday a bus carrying 46 Seventh-day Adventists (many of them young people) from Chiapas, Mexico, plunged down a 90-meter (295 feet) ravine, killing 18. Another 26 were taken to a nearby hospital where a 17-year-old girl died from her injuries. The group was returning from a regional youth congress when the accident occurred.

World Church Youth Associate Director, Back at His Home Division

Associate youth director of the Seventh-day Adventist world church Jonatán Tejel was appointed as the new youth director of the Inter-European (EUD) church region, based in Bern, Switzerland. His appointment was voted at the Mid-Year Meetings of the church region, which took place in Friedensau, Germany, from May 21-23. Tejel, who was born and worked in Spain before becoming an associate youth director of the world church, will return to his home division church region after twelve years in the United States.

The Adventist Church in the Trans-European Region Responds to Manchester Attack

With memories of the London terrorist attack in March still etched on our minds, today the United Kingdom woke up to the aftermath of yet another atrocity. Yesterday evening, May 22, Manchester, the United Kingdom’s second largest city, found itself victim to another act of terrorism. At the time of writing 22 people including children have lost their lives with over 60 hospitalized with serious injuries following a suicide bombing at the close of a concert in the Manchester Arena. Once again the nation is left pondering the futility of such senseless brutality.

In Mexico, Tragic Bus Accident Leaves 17 Dead and More Injured

Seventh-day Adventists in Chiapas, Mexico, are still in shock after a rented bus carrying 46 church members, mostly young people, fell into a 90-meter ravine yesterday killing 16 and sending 26 to nearby hospital. One 17-year-old girl died this morning because of her injuries, bringing the total to 17 deceased, church leaders said. The group was returning from a large youth spiritual retreat held on the beach in Costa del Sol, in the Pijijiapan district, on the pacific coast in southern Chiapas.

Evangelist Cop Baptizes Colleague and Five others during Evangelistic Series

Police Corporal Wayne Bartley who serves as a church elder in the Ocho Ríos Seventh-day Adventist Church in St. Ann, Jamaica, allowed the Holy Spirit to use him to spiritually arrest one of his colleagues and five other individuals during an evangelist series he conducted recently. Bartley, who has been in the Jamaica Constabulary Force for the past fourteen years believes that while he works to keep law and order in the country, he has a commitment to God to recue persons from the clutches of sin and point them to Jesus Christ.

“Safest Hospital in Georgia” Featured in US News Outlets

Gordon Hospital, a Seventh-day Adventist healthcare facility in Calhoun, Georgia, United States, was recently featured in regional news outlets after two major health rating agencies gave the institution their best scores. The 69-bed hospital, which is operated by Adventist Health System, received an A for patient safety by The Leapfrog Group, and a 5-star rating by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Both ratings make Gordon Hospital the best in the state of Georgia, according to several regional news outlets that featured the relatively small health institution.
