IATS grants President Emeritus title to Jaime Castrejon

The Inter-American Adventist Theological Seminary Board named Dr. Jaime Castrejon as its President Emeritus during a special ceremony held in Montemorelos University in North Mexico, this past weekend. Dr. Castrejon, who retired as being IATS president last year, was granted the title and a golden cord for his long leadership in thelogical education and his contribution in ministerial training throughout the Inter-American Division (IAD) for decades.

1,500 flee to Adventist compound amid fighting in South Sudan

About 1,500 people have fled to the compound where the Seventh-day Adventist Church and ADRA have their main offices in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, to escape renewed violence. Hundreds of people have been killed since rival soldiers began fighting in the African city last Thursday. South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir, called for a cease-fire on Monday, but many people have stayed away from their homes as they waited to see whether it would hold.

Hope Channel Inter-America signs collaboration agreement with Montemorelos University

Inter-American Division leaders representing Hope Channel Inter-America signed a special collaboration agreement with leaders at the Montemorelos University last week that will allow both to team up in a number of projects for the multi-channel television network. The agreement, signed on the Montemorelos campus in Mexico, on July 8, will include available human resources and equipment for needed productions for Hope Channel Inter-America’s Spanish channel Esperanza TV Interamérica.

Adventist Church for the deaf to be established in Jamaica

It will soon be easier for the deaf and hard hearing impaired in Jamaica to ‘hear’ the Advent message as Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jamaica progresses plans to establish a church for the deaf in Portmore, St. Catherine. The plans were announced during the first ‘Day of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing’ organized by the Jamaica Union (JAMU) at the Portmore Adventist Church in St. Catherine, July 9, 2016.

Adventists hold high-level Moscow talks about law restricting missionary work

Seventh-day Adventist Church leaders have raised concerns with senior Russian officials about new legislation that would severely restrict missionary activity in Russia by outlawing home churches and the free distribution of religious literature. The legislation — part of a raft of antiterrorism bills — was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin into law on July 7, days after the lower and upper houses of parliament rapidly approved it in separate votes.

In Inter-America, Organizers ramp up planning for next year’s territory-wide Pathfinder Camporee

In Inter-America, Top leadership urges its church leaders to use technology

Top Seventh-day Adventist leaders in Inter-America want administrators, ministers and leaders across the territory to be innovators in using technology to strengthen their congregations in support of the mission of the church. Leaders spoke during a live online session coined as CommSessions yesterday from the Inter-American Division (IAD) Headquarters in Miami, Florida. The one-hour CommSessions brought top church leaders and communication leaders to collaborate on how to use available technology to share the gospel in their communities and on cyberspace.

When Jacob Harris was 8, his family moved from the African country of Liberia to the U.S. state of Maryland so his father could serve as a Lutheran minister. Harris was bullied in school because he was not from the United States. He decided that he didn’t want to be different and started hanging out with gang members. That decision led him to an unhealthy lifestyle including drugs, fighting, and crime.

Adventist-made breakfast cereal takes China by storm

Weet-Bix, a Seventh-day Adventist-made breakfast cereal, has become a hot product in China after being featured on a Chinese television show, with people paying up to U.S.$39 for a box of cereal that usually sells for $4. Enterprising people are filling shopping carts with boxes of Weet-Bix in supermarkets in Australia, where the high-fiber, low-sugar biscuit is produced by the Adventist Church-owned Sanitarium Health and Wellbeing Company, and then reselling them on Chinese commerce websites, news reports said.

Adventist Good Samaritan Inn adds health center to its list of help to the ‘Needy’

The Good Samaritan Inn (GSI), which has been serving the needs of street people for the past 12 years, opened a new health center last week at its headquarters in Kingston, Jamaica. The health center, which will provide free maternal and dental care, including pediatric dental services to the public in parishes of Kingston and St. Andrew, was made possible by a 13th Sabbath School Offering from the Adventist World Church collected in 2014. The facility is to be built in two phases which when completed will cost approximately US$397,000 dollars.

Maranatha Volunteers build new church in Cuba

Seventh-day Adventist volunteers have assisted in the construction of the first church in Cuba in 16 years under the auspices of Adventist supporting ministry Maranatha Volunteers International. Thirty volunteers traveled to Cuba in June to work alongside local crews in raising the two-story church in Cárdenas, a popular coastal tourist resort of 137,000 people located 70 miles (115 kilometers) east of the capital, Havana, as well as to hold dental clinics and children’s outreach activities.
