ADRA calls on the international community to find a timely and humane solution for the resettling of refugees worldwide

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) released the following statement in honor of World Refugee Day. This World Refugee Day, there are more than 60 million people around the world who are internally displaced, seeking asylum, or living as refugees in other countries. The United Nations has described the Syrian crisis, which has displaced approximately half of the country’s population, as the biggest humanitarian emergency of our era.

Washington Adventist University makes historic mission trip to Cuba

Students from Washington Adventist University cleaned streets, painted houses, and conducted a health screening clinic in Havana, Cuba, marking the first time that a Seventh-day Adventist university in North America has sponsored a humanitarian mission trip on the Caribbean island in living memory. A group of 11 student and faculty volunteers painted 20 homes and treated 186 people at the health screening clinic during the 10-day visit, the university said this week.

In North Mexico, Adventist leaders and students have the first opportunity to meet in public university

Seventh-day Adventist leaders in North Mexico are rejoicing for the first opportunity the church had to gather Adventist students enrolled at Antonoma University of Tamaulipas, a public institution, for a special program last month. The four-hour gathering at the university’s auditorium brought the church’s public campus ministries leaders, professionals and students together for the historic meeting which officially launched the beginning of the ministries on the campus.

Inter-America to celebrate ASI Emphasis Day June 18

Hundreds of Seventh-day Adventist business owners and professionals across the Inter-American Division (IAD) will have the opportunity this Sabbath, June 18, to reaffirm their commitment of sharing Christ in their businesses and invite other professionals to join in support of the mission of the church. The Adventist-laymen’s Services and Industries (ASI) Emphasis Day in Inter-America will provide guidance and support for ASI members to reach their chapter goals as they preach the gospel in their project ministries where they live.

How soup is bringing hope to a needy community in Panama

She saw homeless children. She saw troubled young people. She saw the forgotten elderly. These were heart-breaking scenes that moved Fulbia Castrellón as she passed the run-down community park in Concepcion la Vieja--a neighborhood in Panama City, Panama. What could she do to bring hope and make a difference in their lives? Her idea was simple: Soup. That was the spark that drew the interest of women's ministry leaders across the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Panama City.

North American Division statement on Orlando, Florida mass shooting

Daniel R. Jackson, president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America, issued the following statement on June 12, 2016, in response to the mass shooting at the Pulse Club in Orlando, Florida: “The Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America is heartbroken as we mourn the loss of innocent lives in the deadliest mass shooting in United States history. We extend our deepest condolences and prayers for the 50 people killed, the 53 wounded, their families, loved ones, and friends.

In Jamaica, NCU elects US-based dental surgeon as president

Pharmacologist and Dental Surgeon, Dr. Lincoln Edwards, is the new president-elect of Northern Caribbean University (NCU). Dr. Edward was elected yesterday, during a meeting of the Board of Governors of the Seventh-day Adventist-owned institution at the church’s headquarters in Mandeville, Jamaica. Dr. Edwards, who is a native of Jamaica and graduate of the University of the West Indies and Loma Linda University has served as an assistant professor in the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry at Loma Linda University, and is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, School of Dentistry in Houston.

Adventists Rethink How to Defend Religious Freedom in South America

With religious intolerance growing in Brazil, about 500 Seventh-day Adventists gathered on the São Paulo campus of Brazil Adventist University (Unasp) to learn how they could defend religious freedom in their own communities. The training session was the first of its kind and marks a shift in church strategy by introducing a more practical approach to the issue, said Hélio Carnassale, director of the religious liberty department of the Adventist Church’s South American Division, which organized the event.

In Mexico, Pastors commit to engaging their members more in the mission of the church with the “Lord Transform Me” initiative

Johan Pineda stands as the district pastor who has baptized the most people into the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Mexico with 296 new members in 2015. At 31 years of age, he leads 26 churches and 10 small congregations, or companies, in Ocosingo, Chiapas, one of the several religious intolerant regions in the country. Pineda believes the work of evangelism is all about getting his membership of more than 1,100 actively involved in spreading the gospel in creative ways.

Sabbath School class paves way for next U.S. free clinic

The first small-town free clinic organized by Your Best Pathway to Health — which will be held in Beckley, West Virginia, on July 13-15 — is actually the brainchild of the Acceptance Sabbath School class at the Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church in Collegedale, Tennessee. “Several years ago, our mission committee felt that passively writing checks for missions, while good, wasn't enough,” said Bob Gadd, leader of the class of about 100 members. “We wanted the class members to experience missions as well.”

Inter-America brings Adventist leaders for a “Lord Transform Me” regional summit in Mexico

Hundreds of Seventh-day Adventist leaders from across Mexico and Jamaica converged in Riviera Maya in South Mexico last night to pursue a transformation in Christ Jesus and to be instructed on the evangelism initiative that will drive the church in their respective territories during the next four years. “Just by having a personal relationship with the Lord, we are transformed,” said Filiberto Verduzco, treasurer of the church in Inter-America as he addressed the more than 1,300 ministers and church administrators.

Adventist-sponsored Washington D.C. gala rallies broad support for religious freedom

At a Seventh-day Adventist-sponsored dinner in Washington, D.C, a high-ranking African Union official challenged the international community to step up its efforts to track and respond to religious intolerance and sectarian violence. Erastus J.O. Mwencha, Jr., deputy chairman of the African Union, told a group of Washington D.C.’s policy makers and thought-leaders gathered for the 14th annual Religious Liberty Dinner on May 24, that there’s no room for complacency when it comes to defending religious freedom.
