Puerto Rico begins to raise big money for Nepal

Shockwaves from Nepal’s powerful earthquake reached as far as the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, whose Seventh-day Adventist community has a special connection with the south Asian country. Within days of the April 25 earthquake, Adventist leaders in Puerto Rico responded by calling two news conferences to raise funds for Adventist-operated Scheer Memorial Hospital, whose chief medical officer and administrator, Fernando Cardona, is a Puerto Rican native.

Busy month takes Adventist leader from Easter Island to Zimbabwe

Adventist Church leader Ted N.C. Wilson has embarked on a South American tour that will see him speak 26 times in 11 days as he attends baptisms, parades, and building inaugurations from Peru to Easter Island. The frenetic pace will keep up after the trip ends. Days after returning to Adventist world church headquarters in the U.S., Wilson will depart for a two-week evangelistic series in Zimbabwe.

Adventist Church in Hungary reconciles with breakaway group after 40 years

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Hungary and a breakaway group of hundreds of former Adventists has agreed to put aside past grievances and work toward healing a 40-year schism. The Hungarian church split in 1975 amid a protest by young pastors and other members over local church leaders’ collaboration with the Council of Free Churches, a body formed to represent the common interests of small Protestant denominations that later become a tool of the communist state.

U.S. Senator says Adventists lead in protecting religious freedom

A senior U.S. senator said religious freedom was under threat in the United States and around the world and praised the Seventh-day Adventist Church for playing a major role in defending it. Senator Orrin Hatch, speaking at an annual religious liberty dinner sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, criticized the situation with religious freedom in countries such as China, Iran, Nigeria, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.

ADRA boosts earthquake relief efforts in Nepal

An ADRA emergency response team arrived in Nepal on Tuesday to step up efforts to provide food and shelter to scores of people left destitute by a deadly earthquake last weekend. The April 25 disaster killed more than 5,000 people and left another 10,000 injured, Nepalese authorities said.

Church leaders challenge theology students to be prepared for the line of fire

Hundreds of graduating theology students across Seventh-day Adventist university campuses in Inter-America took time today to listen to top church leaders talk about the importance of their calling as ministers, their role and the realities of how the church moves and grows in the field. The two-hour event, streamed live over the internet, was held from the Inter-American Division (IAD) headquarters in Miami, Florida, and was meant to let graduating students and those needing one more year to complete seminary know that they are not alone and they must cling to the Holy Spirit as they commit to serving God wholeheartedly.

The president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Nepal appealed for urgent help Monday for scores of church members who lost everything in a devastating earthquake over the weekend. Members are in immediate need of warm clothing, drinking water, and tents to cope with living outdoors in cold, sometimes rainy weather after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Sabbath, April 25, killing more than 4,000 people and injuring 7,000, said Umesh Pokharel, president of the Nepal Section, an attached field of the Adventist Church’s Southern Asia Division.

Adventists rush to help after deadly quake rocks Nepal

Seventh-day Adventist doctors and ADRA workers sprang to work in Nepal after a powerful earthquake killed more than 1,150 people on Sabbath, April 25, as Adventist believers worldwide lifted up the country in prayer. The Adventist hospital near Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, was overflowing with patients injured by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which struck around midday about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Kathmandu.

The president of the Adventist Church in Nepal described scenes of suffering and panic after a powerful weekend earthquake and multiple aftershocks killed more than 2,200 people and damaged scores of buildings, including at least four Adventist churches. Umesh Pokharel, president of the Nepal Section, an attached field of the Southern Asia Division, said no Adventist believers are known to have been injured in the 7.8 magnitude quake, which struck around midday Sabbath, April 25, as Christians of all faiths worshiped across the country.
