Leaders from Adventist schools across Costa Rica met this week to launch a new literacy program aimed at children in rural communities. The initiative pairs volunteer teachers with local churches to offer weekend reading workshops, with a goal of reaching more than fifteen hundred students by the end of the year.

“Literacy opens doors that nothing else can,” said Rebeca Solano, education director for the Costa Rica Conference. Solano noted that early results from a pilot program last year showed measurable improvement in reading comprehension among participating students, which encouraged organizers to expand the effort into additional provinces this year.
