In Jamaica, Adventist Hospital is Site of the World’s First Viscoelastic 4-level Cervical Disc Replacement

Seventh-day Adventists-owned Andrews Memorial Hospital (AMH) in Kingston, Jamaica, was the Center of Excellence site where a patient was the first ever to benefit from a 4-level viscoelastic cervical disc replacement procedure. The surgery, which will usher in a revolutionary new treatment approach in spinal surgery globally, was performed by a team of doctors led by Harvard-trained and world-renown orthopedic spinal surgeon, Dr. Kingsley R Chin on Jan. 30, 2017, using an advanced technology known as the Freedom Cervical Disc.

Inter-America Launches Comprehensive Plan to Certify More Than 30,000 Church Elders

Top Seventh-day Adventist leaders at the Inter-American Division (IAD) took time last weekend to honor the work of its thousands of church elders who assist pastors in ministering to the 3.7 million members across the vast territory. The live two-hour online program was also a time to launch a new certification program aimed at equipping church elders who nurture and disciple members every week across more than 21,000 churches and congregations in the IAD.

Propelled by Total Member Involvement, Adventist Church tops 20 million members

A major drive to engage every church member in Total Member Involvement has helped propel the Seventh-day Adventist Church past 20 million members for the first time in its history. The Adventist Church had 20,008,779 members as of Dec. 31, 2016, a net increase of 882,332 people, or 4.6 percent, from the previous year, the church’s Office of Archives, Statistics, and Research said.

Film on Desmond Doss’s life receives two Academy Awards

“Hacksaw Ridge,” a film that tells the story of Desmond T. Doss, the Seventh-day Adventist army medic who became the first conscientious objector to win the Congressional Medal of Honor, won two Oscars at the 89th Academy Awards on February 26.

In Haiti, Adventist Communicators are Trained to Connect Better with Their Churches and Communities

A core group of Seventh-day Adventist communicators in Haiti took part in special training sessions last week to focus on sharing the message of hope in their communities. Nearly 100 traveled to the capital city of Port-au-Prince to learn more about church initiatives and resources, sharpen their skills, and network to better serve their local congregations and communities during the two-day event held Feb. 20-21, 2017.

Andrews University takes bold steps to foster racial reconciliation

Andrews University, a leading Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher learning in Berrien Springs, Michigan, United States, is taking resolute steps to foster racial reconciliation, after officially responding to a video message that a group of concerned African-American students shared on social media on February 18. The video requested that school leaders formally apologize for what the students called “the systemic racism [the school] has perpetuated on its campus.”

Facing Charges, Adventist leaders in Argentina pledge to start anew

Leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Argentina have pledged to make amendments and start anew after a federal judge recently decided to prosecute some of them, together with the ADRA country director and two former officers of the Adventist university in the country, on charges of allegedly smuggling undeclared electronic goods into the South American country.

In Jamaica, five deaf persons join the church among dozens baptized

Five deaf persons were among the 104 persons baptized during a tent evangelistic series held in Portmore, St. Catherine, in Jamaica, last week. The hard of hearing new members are the first to be baptized since the Church for the Deaf was established at the Portmore Seventh-day Adventist Church three months ago. Pastor of the Church for the Deaf Coneil Morgan, whose training in sign language gives him the ability to communicate effectively with members of the deaf community, said that the church has been growing and several hard-of-hearing individuals have expressed an interest in joining.

Inter-America to launch live online training program for its church elders

A special program to honor the work of thousands of church elders across the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Inter-America will take place this Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Miami Time. Themed Committed to God, the two-hour online event will will also provide training for church elders, who assist pastors in leading in over 21,000 churches and congregations in the Inter-American Division (IAD) territory.

In Mexico City, Adventist School among top 20 primary schools

An Adventist school in the district of Benito Juarez in Mexico City, Mexico, was recently declared one of 20 best primary schools across the federal district. Miguel Angel Asturias Adventist School, a Pre-K to 9th grade institution, ranked number 17 out of the 3,036 primary schools in the capital city. The results stated that the Adventist school is considered as a Primary School of Excellence from an online grading system.

In Central Mexico, hundreds connect on social media to share about Jesus

Hundreds of Adventist young people in Central Mexico took to their mobile devices to share about Jesus during a live event held at the Adventist Central Church in Mexico City, on Feb. 11, 2017. More than 1,000 youth met with church leaders during a special program on Facebook Live which was viewed across the seven states comprising the Central Mexican Union, or region. Themed “Conectados en Fe,” or Connected in Faith, the program consisted of young people sharing faith-based videos, images, and audio messages to five of their non-Adventist friends related to the “Fe de Jesus 2.0” or the Faith of Jesus 2.0 online Bible study course.

Training center for religious freedom advocates opens at Adventist College in France

Church leaders, United Nations representatives, academics and students celebrated the opening February 4 of the International Center for Religious Freedom and Public Affairs at the Adventist Campus in Collonges-sous-Salève, France. The college, located just a short distance from the French-Swiss border and the city of Geneva, has had many connections through the years with religious freedom luminaries.
