Southern Hosts Mentoring Event for Filmmakers

Four days of mentorship and learning for student filmmakers at Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee, called “The Roundtable” recently marked 15 years of the church-owned school’s Film Production program, which is based at Southern’s School of Visual Art and Design. The series, the first of its kind at the university, featured more than 25 alumni as presenters, discussing such topics as Finding the Passion,” “The Real World,” and “Putting It All Together.”

No more Sabbath classes for nursing students in Bangladesh

Seventh-day Adventist students who wish to become nurses will no longer face a Sabbath conflict with the opening of the church’s first nursing school in Bangladesh in January. Adventist Church president Ted N.C. Wilson joined other church leaders in cutting the red ribbon Friday at a dedication ceremony for the three-story facility that will house the Bangladesh Adventist Nursing School at Bangladesh Adventist Seminary and College in Gowalbathan Kaliakoir, a town located a two-hour drive from the country’s capital, Dhaka.

Hope Channel Inter-America holds first cinematography workshop for media production specialists

A group of media production specialists from across Seventh-day Adventist media centers throughout the Inter-American Division (IAD) met this week during a cinematography workshop hosted by Hope Channel Inter-America. The three-day event sought to engage professionals to sharpen their skills, dive into creating documentary short films, network as a team, and commit to sharing the hope in Jesus in every message they create and share for the millions of viewers living in the territory.

Inter-America’s Bible Boom finalists compete in the Dominican Republic

Twenty-four finalists representing Inter-America’s church territories will compete one last time this year for the Bible Boom title on Dec. 10, 2016. The finalists will travel to the Dominican Republic to test their knowledge of the books of Joshua, Judges, Ruth, and Chapters 1-12 of Ellen G. White’s Patriarch’s and Prophets. The event becomes the 13th annual territory-wide Bible bowl competition initiative that has engaged thousands of young people across thousands of churches to dive into assigned Bible books to strengthen their spiritual life, youth ministries leaders say.

Paperback telling Desmond Doss story logs 1 million in print in weeks

Hero of Hacksaw Ridge,” a paperback book containing a biography of Desmond T. Doss, Sr., the Seventh-day Adventist who was the first conscientious objector to receive the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor, as well as an essay on the faith that shaped his life, has topped 1 million copies in print. The milestone, rarely achieved by any book on any subject, comes less than a week after the premiere of “Hacksaw Ridge,” a motion picture drama starring actor Andrew Garfield and directed by veteran actor-director Mel Gibson.

Important responsibility in following voted World Church actions

“Seventh-day Adventist Church policies are decided through a lengthy process involving multiple committees and councils, and it is the sacred responsibility of the General Conference president and all other church leaders everywhere to follow, according to policy, what the world church has voted,” General Conference president Ted N.C. ADRA shipping 2.85 million meals to Haiti

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency has partnered with Stop Hunger Now, a nongovernmental organization, to deliver 2,851,200 meals to people in Haiti as part of the ongoing Hurricane Matthew disaster response. ADRA and Stop Hunger Now sent the first 285,120 meals by airplane from Miami on Nov. 1 with the assistance of Airlink, a rapid-response relief organization that links nonprofit groups with partner airlines in emergencies.

Adventist leaders review church growth across Inter-America

Top Seventh-day Adventist administrators and church leaders from the Inter-American Division (IAD) concluded their annual year-end business meetings this week. They looked at the membership and financial growth of the IAD's 24 major church regions so far this year. The more than 100 leaders representing the 44 countries and islands in the IAD gathered for the final two days of meetings in San Salvador, El Salvador, held Oct. 29-30, 2016.

Nursing students from the University of the Virgin islands (UVI) in St. Croix partnered with two Seventh-day Adventist congregations to offer health screenings and join a health expo that featured mental health counseling and healthy lifestyle.

In Puerto Rico, Adventists point to Jesus during US election year

Seventh-day Adventists took to the streets of several cities and towns last weekend to spread hope for a better future in Jesus as U.S. elections draw to a close in the coming days. Hundreds of church members waved flags and caravanned through communities in Aguas Buenas, Cidra and Cayey in the southeastern part of the island. It was the last in a multi-city plan to point people to Jesus Christ as the end of primary elections takes place on Nov. 8, organizers said.

NAD Executive Committee votes continued support of World Church

After three hours of discussion, 2016 NAD Year-End Meeting delegates voted on two motions pertaining to the General Conference (GC) Unity in Mission document. The discussion was broken into two segments, one on Oct. 28, and the second on Oct. 31. The first motion was made near the conclusion of the Oct. 28 session. Randall Wisbey, president of La Sierra University, commented on how the GC has not included Sandra Roberts, president of the Southeastern California Conference, in the church’s yearbook.

Adventist Church inaugurates new headquarter office in El Salvador

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in El Salvador celebrated the inauguration of the church’s new headquarter office during a special ceremony yesterday in San Salvador, El Salvador. “You have this beautiful great office now, so may everyone who comes to this building see the glory of God shinning through you,” said Tim Aka, associate treasurer for the Adventist world church, as he spoke to the hundreds of top church leaders from the Adventist World Church, the Inter-American Division, local church members and neighbors witnessed the historic event.
