Adventist Heritage Ministry to become part of Ellen White Estate

The ministry that manages Adventist historic sites is about to become more integrated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s structure. The denomination’s Ellen G. White Estate board last week approved Adventist Heritage Ministry’s request to become a more fully recognized entity of the Church. Beginning in January, AHM, which owns four properties related to founders of the Adventist Church, will have a fulltime executive director who will also serve as an associate director of the White Estate, Church officials said.

SCOTUS grants workplace religious discrimination case supported by Adventists

The Supreme Court of the United States today accepted its first workplace religious freedom case in nearly 30 years, one that Seventh-day Adventists and other faith groups had urged the nation’s top court to grant. The case, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission vs. Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc., involves a Muslim woman who was denied a job because her hijab—a head covering—violated corporate policy. Adventist feared that a ruling by a lower court could eroded workplace religious freedom rights, including those of Adventists who choose not to work on Saturday, the biblical Sabbath.

In U.S., Southern Adventist University receives Governor’s Healthier Workplace Award

Southern Adventist University received the 2014 Governor’s Healthier Workplace award, part of the state's Healthier Tennessee initiative, for meeting all 32 of the program’s requirements and being an involved community advocate for wellness. The normal lifestyle on campus met a lot of the simple criteria for having a healthy workplace, including vegetarian meals and an alcohol- and smoking-free environment.

Theology of ordination, Oakwood constituency among agenda items for Annual Council

Seventh-day Adventist world church leaders are set to discuss the theology of ordination and the ownership constituency of a university among other agenda items later this month at the 2014 Annual Council, a meeting of the Seventh-day Adventist world church’s Executive Committee. The theology of ordination will likely be the key discussion of the seven-day meeting. The denomination has engaged in a nearly five-year study of the matter, which has implications for ordination and how it relates to gender.

Flood kills teacher at Adventist school in India

An Adventist boarding school in northeast India has been devastated by a flash flood that killed one teacher and forced it to close its doors to 900 elementary and high school students for at least a month or two. Floodwaters swamped Riverside Adventist Academy in the Indian state of Meghalay after torrential rain unexpectedly caused the banks of the nearby Didram River to overflow.

Pastor abducted during church service in East Ukraine

A Seventh-day Adventist pastor is missing after being abducted by gunmen during a communion service last Sabbath at a church in separatist-controlled eastern Ukraine, local church leaders said. Unidentified men carrying machine guns and wearing camouflage burst into the church in the city of Horlivka on September 27 and seized Pastor Sergei Litovchenko, the Ukrainian Union Conference said.

Adventist Church President calls for day of prayer for Ebola victims

Seventh-day Adventist Church President Ted N. C. Wilson issued the following statement today: On behalf of the leadership and membership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in its 13 world divisions, and indeed the more than 18 million members in 215 countries, I would like to express my deep concern for the people in West Africa who are living under the threat of the Ebola virus—particularly in the countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal and Nigeria.

Adventist leader in Jamaica challenges men to be more than agents of procreation

Head of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jamaica, Pastor Everett Brown challenged Christian men and those in the wider society to be agents of positive change in society and not just agents of procreation. In addressing the gathering of approximately 3,000, most of the them men, during a Men’s convention at the NCU Gymnatorium in Mandeville earlier this month, Pastor Brown asked if they really knew who they were, what their purpose in life was and their role and responsibility towards family, church, and society.

Nigeria Adventist leader says Boko Haram destroyed Adventist church

A Seventh-day Adventist Church official in Northern Nigeria said the terrorist group Boko Haram destroyed an Adventist Church last month after members fled the area. The Magar Adventist Church in the Northeastern state of Borno was burned on Saturday, August 23, said Stephen H. Bindas, president of the Northern Nigeria Union Conference, based in Abuja. The incident happened after the congregation’s 67 members left the area to escape Boko Haram’s threats, Bindas said.

Adventists urged to study women’s ordination for themselves

Ted N. C. Wilson, president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, appealed to church members worldwide to earnestly read what the Bible says about women’s ordination and to pray that he and other church leaders humbly follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance on the matter. Church members wishing to understand what the Bible teaches on women’s ordination have no reason to worry about where to start, said Artur A. Stele, who oversaw an unprecedented, two-year study on women’s ordination as chair of the church-commissioned Theology of Ordination Study Committee.
