The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Spain recently received a license to officially broadcast the nation’s first non-Catholic religious station, marking what Church leaders say is a significant step for religious liberty in the country. The Association of Adventist Radio in Spain received a license for an FM station from the Council for Audiovisuals in Catalonia on September 3.
Seventh-day Adventist Church leaders are inviting members to join the United Nations’ International Day of Peace on Sunday, September 21 by responding to a call for a minute of silence at noon with prayer. In prepared remarks for the upcoming day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged people to reflect on peace. “We must douse the fires of extremism and tackle the root causes of conflict. Peace is a long road that we must travel together—step by step, beginning today.”
The Seventh-day Adventist Church’s top health official commended the World Health Organization for its first ever report on suicide, which offers statistics and action steps for promoting suicide prevention as a higher priority on the global public health agenda. Dr. Peter Landless, Health Ministries director for the Adventist Church, said the stigma of suicide could be reduced with more awareness in society and in religious organizations, which would allow people to seek help more readily.
Loma Linda University topped all other colleges and universities in the nation for graduates who find meaning in their work, based on a survey of 1.4 million college and university alumni, according to PayScale.com. Each year, PayScale, an organization that provides salary, benefits and compensation information, surveys alumni from more than 1,000 U.S. colleges and universities.
He had to repeat first grade three times. When he got to the fourth grade he didn’t know how to do his multiplication tables. Living at home in San Vicente, in El Salvador, with his nine brothers and sisters, there did not seem to be much hope for Elmer Omar Alferez. His report cards showed very low grades until the 6th grade when he was enrolled in the Colegio Modelo Adventista (Adventist Model School) in his hometown. There he found a teacher by the name of Daniel Avilez who took special interest in Alferez and told him not ever let anyone tell him that he could not accomplish something.
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency is establishing two temporary health camps in Western Nepal to assist some of the 180,000 people still affected by last month’s deadly flooding. To date, floods have killed 32 and left more than 30,000 families without food, clothing and shelter. Local authorities are reporting a rapid rise in potentially deadly illnesses including diarrhea and malaria, said Beryl Hartmann, Humanitarian Program coordinator for ADRA Australia.
The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Inter-America gathered a core group of its teachers, professors, and educators from across its hundreds of schools and universities for the second territory-wide Education Congress which began last night. More than 1,000 Adventist educators convened in Riviera Maya in Mexico for the four-day event which promises to reassure them of their important leadership role in the lives of their pupils, equip them with knowledge and remind them of their mission to prepare children and young people for the Kingdom of Heaven.
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in Costa Rica, together with its church member volunteers, descended on the city of Heredia in Costa Rica last month to offer food to the homeless, showcase a health expo, and promote a recycling campaign, among other activities. The event, which took place in Heredia’s Central Park, brought young people to connect with onlookers and passers-by with a hug, a cheer and activities like face painting for children.
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency is partnering with other Adventist organizations to provide needed medical supplies in West Africa as the region grapples with an ongoing Ebola outbreak. In a release today, ADRA announced it is partnering with GlobalMedic to airlift $50,000 worth of supplies to Waterloo Adventist Hospital located in Freetown, Sierra Leone. ADRA is also partnering with Loma Linda University, Adventist Health International and Adventist Health Ministries to provide $92,000 worth of equipment and supplies to Cooper Adventist Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia.
The Seventh-day Adventist Church is holding a global stewardship advisory later this month to offer Church leaders and members education on biblical principles of planning and managing resources. The World Stewardship Online Conference is set for September 19 to 21 and will be offered in four languages—English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
Hundreds of students from across Seventh-day Adventist Schools marched and played their instruments during a band festival last week in Santa Ana, El Salvador. Themed “Praising God with our talents,” the festival brought dozens of the 45 primary and secondary schools in the Central American nation to perform on their drums, trumpets, flutes, and cymbals in the city’s Central Plaza for a special program where the national anthem, pledge to the flag and a special prayer for Santa Ana were offered.
