In the U.S., California earthquake devastates Adventist school

A powerful earthquake that struck the U.S. state of California last weekend badly damaged a Seventh-day Adventist school, forcing it to close just four days into the school year and to launch a drive to raise $200,000 for repairs. The school, Napa Christian Campus of Education, appeared to be the only Adventist facility to sustain major damage in the 6.0 quake that rocked Napa County at 3:20 a.m. on Sunday, August 24. Pacific Union College, located nearly miles from the school, emerged unscathed.

Inter-America’s ASi Convention encourages members for more regional growth

Inter-America’s Adventist-layman’s Services and Industries (ASi) held it’s 14th annual convention in Puebla, Mexico, Aug. 13-16, 2014. The convention brought more than 130 professionals and church leaders from across Inter-America to reaffirm their involvement in the mission of the church through their businesses. Participants also learned how to network better and strategize for greater outreach in their business areas.

Adventist Church files amicus brief for workplace religious freedom case at top U.S. court

The Seventh-day Adventist Church filed an amicus brief today urging the United States’ top court to accept the case of a Muslim girl who was denied a job because her hijab—a head-covering—violated a company’s policy. The Adventist Church’s “friend-of-the-court” brief is joined by seven other faith groups for the case Equal Employment Opportunity Commission vs. Abercrombie & Fitch Stores, Inc. The U.S. Supreme Court will decide in October whether to accept the case.

In Colombia, university students are motivated to serve in the mission field

Nearly 2,000 young people, students and professionals from throughout Colombia, Peru and Argentina took part in an Adventist Missions International Congress coined as “I will go too.” The congress sought to motivate professionals and university students to serve in the mission field. Organized by Colombia Adventist University in Medellin, Jul. 31- Aug. 2, 2014, the event is third such event to promote the mission work around the world.

In Trinidad, Adventist university opens Center for African Studies

The University of Southern Caribbean (USC) launched its Center for African Studies to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the British West Indies, during a special activities held on campus in Trinidad and Tobago, Aug. 4, 2014. Minister Councillor of the Nigerian High Commission Nasiru Waje commended university leaders for the initiative and said the center “should be viewed as an ‘Act of restitution’ as it helps to ensure that the contributions of Africans to humanity are well transmitted and documented.”

Adventist Church appoints Reece, Williams honorary Health Ministries leaders

The University of Maryland medical school dean and a Harvard University professor are the newest honorary associate Health Ministries directors for the Seventh-day Adventist world church. Adventist Church members Dr. E. Albert Reece, distinguished professor and dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and David R. Williams, a professor of public health at Harvard University, were approved as Health Ministry advisers earlier this month by the General Conference Administrative Committee.

In Suriname, Church celebrates 120th anniversary of Adventist message

The Seventh-day Adventist Church held a series of activities earlier this month to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Adventist message entering Suriname. It was a celebration which gathered dozens of church leaders, government leaders and community members at the Chamber of Commerce in Paramaribo, Aug. 6-9, 2014. Vice President of the Republic of Suriname Robert Ameerali praised the work of the church for its contribution to society during a prayer breakfast held with parliament officials and religious liberty leaders.

Andrews theologians approve statement on headship

The faculty of the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University has voted a statement on Biblical concepts of headship, the university said Friday. Teachers at the church’s main North American training ground for pastors adopted a seven-page study titled, “On the Unique Headship of Christ in the Church.”

British Pathfinders Escape Bus Fire After Oshkosh Camporee

A group of Adventist children from Britain narrowly escaped a fire that destroyed their bus as they left the International Pathfinder Camporee in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, last weekend. A tire blew out on the bus as it traveled on a Wisconsin highway for Atlanta, Georgia, on Aug. 17. The driver pulled over to the side of the highway to take a closer look, but then a fire quickly erupted.

Wilson: No room for evolution in Adventist schools

Seventh-day Adventist world church President Ted N. C. Wilson forcefully asserted that life has existed on the Earth for only a few thousand years, not millions of years, as he opened an educators conference in Utah on Friday, and he said teachers who believe otherwise should not call themselves Seventh-day Adventists or work in Church-operated schools.

Venezuela: Adventists participate in city-wide impact throughout capital city

Hundreds of Seventh-day Adventists took a week off from their busy schedules for a major community impact event in Caracas, Venezuela, from August 4-9, 2014. The six-day impact saw more than 2,000 volunteers bring a smile, share hope and beautify and offer help in dozens of parks, streets and communities throughout the city.

Adventist Church’s anti-abuse initiative set for August 23

Seventh-day Adventist world church leaders are calling on all Adventist congregations to designate a portion of their August 23 church service to mark the EndItNow Abuse Prevention Emphasis Day. The Adventist Church’s annual day of emphasis brings awareness to the issues of domestic violence, sexual abuse and other forms of mistreatment. Church leaders are also urging members and others in the community to sign an online petition for world leaders to endorse EndItNow as global campaign.
